Government of Kenya Assures Public of Adequate Fuel Supply Amid Middle East Tensions

The Ministry of Energy and Petroleum has assured Kenyans that the country has sufficient petroleum stocks despite escalating tensions in the Middle East, where much of Kenya’s fuel supply is sourced.

In a press statement issued on March 3, 2026, Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi said the ministry has reviewed the current supply and stock situation and confirmed that the country is adequately covered.

“As at today, the country has sufficient stocks to cover both the country and the region. We have scheduled imports for delivery up to the end of April 2026 and, therefore, as it stands, we are assured of security of supply,” the statement read.

The ministry noted that it is closely monitoring developments in the Middle East and is engaging government-to-government (G-G) suppliers as part of contingency planning efforts.

Officials further reassured the public and stakeholders that the government remains alert and will continue taking necessary measures to ensure uninterrupted fuel supply across the country.

The ministry pledged to keep the public informed as the situation evolves.

Flood Alert Issued for Eight Counties in Kenya

The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a flood alert for several counties across the country, warning residents to prepare for heavy rainfall expected to begin tomorrow.

The alert covers Samburu County, Turkana County, Marsabit County, Isiolo County, Elgeyo-Marakwet County, West Pokot County, Laikipia County and other parts of the country.

According to the department, heavy rains are forecast to fall from March 4 through March 7, increasing the risk of flooding, particularly in low-lying areas and along riverbanks.

Residents living in flood-prone zones have been urged to remain vigilant and move to safer areas if necessary. Authorities have also cautioned motorists against attempting to drive through flooded roads or cross swollen rivers, warning that such actions could be life-threatening.

Members of the public are further advised to avoid sheltering under trees during thunderstorms to reduce the risk of lightning strikes.

SCHOOL IN BARINGO SOUTH FACES CLOSURE AS ENROLLMENT CRISIS DEEPENS

Education stakeholders in Baringo South have expressed deep concern over the state of secondary schools in the area, warning that several institutions are at risk of closure due to low student enrollment and inadequate funding.

The concerns were raised during a stakeholders’ meeting held in Marigat, which brought together officials from the national government, representatives from the Ministry of Education, and local leaders.

School principals criticized the student placement criteria used by the Ministry of Education, arguing that they disproportionately disadvantage Category C4 schools. According to them, some schools did not receive even a single Form One student despite having made early preparations at the beginning of the year.

Schools such as Karnee and Sokotei are reported to have extremely low student numbers, raising serious concerns about their financial and academic sustainability. Principals noted that declining enrollment directly affects government capitation funds, making it difficult to maintain operations and deliver quality education.

The KEPSHA Baringo South chairperson described the situation as alarming, linking it to poor academic performance and a lack of coordination between teachers and school leadership. The Sub-County Director of Education echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the urgent need for strategic interventions to improve performance and attract more students.

In response to the challenges, the Member of Parliament for Baringo South announced full sponsorship for all students attending day secondary schools in the constituency. The initiative aims to boost enrollment, stabilize affected institutions, and prevent potential school closures.

The MP underscored that education remains a critical pillar for transforming lives and shaping the future of the community, calling on parents, teachers, and leaders to work together to safeguard the region’s schools.

EWASO NYIRO PEACE CARAVAN

More than 4 million people living in atleast 7 counties residing in Northern Kenya lives and livelihoods depend on the Ewaso Nyiro River. The river flows from Lake Olbolossat on the slopes of Mt Kenya to Lorian Swamp in Wajir County. Residents along the river depend on the river for agriculture, pastoralism, tourism and water for domestic use. However this shared resource that is a lifeline for many is facing a serious threat. Due to climate change and increased human activities along the river, the water levels have been dwindling year in year out resulting to conflict among communities in Northern Kenya.

Last year Radio Ashe team joined a camel peace caravan for 3 days along the Ewaso Nyiro river basin to create awareness on the importance of the conserving the resource. The journey of approximately 53kilometers also provided a platform for more 6 communities; Samburu, Turkana, Pokot, Borana, Rendille and Somali to have a dialogue on peace and security which has been a challenge in the region. Radio Ashe took this opportunity to conduct live radio discussions on the banks of the river on the river beds in the evening on the importance of conservation, peace and pastoralism which is the main economic mainstay of the communities.

Radio Ashe convened a dialogue that brought together elders from all the pastoralist communities on ways to enhance peaceful coexistence amongst pastoralist communities. Elders used the platform to discuss ways on how to use the shared resources sustainable without resulting to conflict as it has been witnessed before.  The radio played a powerful role in the caravan of emphasizing the rallying call of living in peace and conserving the Great Ewaso Nyiro River.

Radio Ashe team also took advantage of the caravan to distribute solar powered radio sets from Sonset solutions to different communities. The team distributed the radio sets to the elders, morans and women drawn from different communities in Northern Kenya that were represented in the Caravan.
