Radio Ashe a voice of healing and hope in Samburu County
On the 23 rd of January 2026 Radio Ashe team joined Naret a local CBO in Samburu County for a bonfire meeting in the evening from 8pm to 10pm. Among the Samburu, communities gather around bonfire at night for important talks about the community or the family. On this particular day, Radio Ashe broadcasted the bonfire health talk on the radio concerning the health effects of Female Genital Mutilation and Cervical cancer which is on the rise among
women in Samburu County. The aim was to amplify the message and ensure there in increased awareness and sensitization on the effects of FGM as well as Cervical cancer.
Samburu County is among the counties with the highest prevalence of FGM at 86% according to the latest demographic health survey that was held in 2022. FGM which is a community rite ofpassage has serious health implications such as excessive bleeding and complications during birth for women who have gone through the cut. Bernadette Loloju who is the Anti FGM Board CEO in Kenya took part in the talk show and encouraged communities to end the vice due to its
harmful health effects.
Similar sentiments were echoed by Dr Mayian Lekirimpoto who says that FGM and child marriages leads to early sexual debut among girls in the Samburu Commmunity. These vices pre-expose the young girls to cervical cancer which is on the rise in Samburu County.
Unfortunately many women show up at the hospital when it is already too late. Radio Ashe has played a key role in Health education and promotion among pastoralists’ communities in Kenya to prevent some of these illnesses and promote health seeking behavior which is poor amongst
pastoralist communities.
Radio Ashe has set aside Tuesday for health programming right from the morning show to the night shows. The radio programs hosts medical practitioners who share insights of different illnesses, prevention measures as well as encouraging the community members to seek medical care for early intervention in the event of sickness. Radio Ashe received a donation of solar powered radio receivers from Sonset Solutions and used the opportunity of the bonfire health
talk to distribute the sets to communities in Ngutuk Engiron and its environs which is one of the most remote villages in Samburu County with no network connectivity.
